According to Council for Excellence in Government and the American Red Cross, most families are no more prepared for a natural or man-made disaster today than they were before Hurricane Katrina destroyed the city of New Orleans, or the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers Sept. 11, 2001.
While hurricane season runs from June through November each year, disaster knows no season.
The Homeland Security Department has designated September as National Preparedness Month, and in tandem, the Army has created “Ready Army,” a program focused on educating and informing the Total Army Family by providing emergency preparedness tools throughout the month.
Through this formalized campaign, Fort Rucker leaders will continue to take steps to improve awareness and educate personnel through briefings, emergency preparedness programming on Channel 6, the post e-mail system, Web site and AM 1640 radio. Picerne Military Housing has also been proactive by informing residents through its widely distributed newsletters.
Fort Rucker's Ready Army Web page offers its Soldiers, Families and civilians the tools they need to prepare for any emergency. Beginning with a Readiness Quotient quiz, community members can diagnose their level of readiness, and then use the information available on the site to become truly Ready to face the unexpected.
